Director's Statement
Working on Thursday Night Downtown came at a time where everything just sort of fell into place with where I was with my experience level and technical prowess. Producers Dina Najjar and Jessica Montgomery did a lot of the pre-production heavy work and really brought together a great team of talent on both sides of the camera to create a product that I'm wildly proud of.
While the script was quite polished on day one of shooting, the shot list was a little looser and it gave us a little flexibility with the action. In fact, two of the funniest moments in the film were unscripted and are credited to extras stepping up and making suggestions. We had some challenges with limited time to shoot at some of the locations, but everyone really pitched in and made it happen.
Thursday Night Downtown started for me as a fun girl's night out comedy, but diving futher into Fiona's character, we wanted to tell a deeper story about friendship and what it means to be a friend. How you can be fundamentally different people, but still provide that moment of clarity when all seems lost. The more I read the script and the more refined and finalized it got, the more I really felt for the Fiona character and the person she thought she was supposed to be. It resonated personally with me because I'm always that person who helps when people ask, but I rarely ask for that help in return. So while the film is intended to be a comedy, I found much more in it. And I hope others will too.
